Chemical composition and pharmacological properties
1 g contains 12,000,000 IU of colistin sulfate (equivalent to 500 mg) as an active ingredient. Colistin sulfate (i.e., the drug ingredient) affects a number of gram-negative microorganisms including Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aerobacter aerogenes, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Klebsiella spp., Proteus spp., and Salmonella spp.
The mechanism of bactericidal colistin action is associated with an effect on plasma membrane permeability leading to death of microorganisms.
When administered orally, colistin is slightly absorbed in gastrointestinal tract. It does not accumulate in organs and tissues. Also, it is not affected by digestive enzymes. Finally, it has an antimicrobial intestinal effect. It is excreted unchanged, mainly, in urine and feces.
In terms of health effect, this product is a moderately hazardous substance (Hazard Category III as per GOST 12.1.007-76).
